The THD Sphinkeeper is the new method of treating faecal incontinence. The method involves implanting specifically designed self-expandable prostheses into the intersphincteric space.

10 sterile self-expandable prostheses are implanted into the intersphincteric space. Once expanded, a shape memory doughnut is created between the IAS and the EAS like a third artificial anal sphincter.

THD SphinKeeper® implants are made with HYEXPAN, a patented THD material with SHAPE MEMORY.
Hyexpan is:

  • Biocompatible
  • No allergenic
  • No immunogenic
  • Non carcenogenic

Studies conclude that implantation is not followed by septic or adverse reactions, does not result in short term dislodgement and is well tolerated.

The THD Gatekeeper method involves implanting a permanent self-expanding device in the intersphincteric space of the perianal area under local anaesthesia. Unlike other very invasive techniques, the Gatekeeper method, using minimally invasive surgery, aims to cure the problem of faecal incontinence with limited risks, no change in physical appearance and, more importantly, with lasting effects over time.

Patients operated on to date using the THD Gatekeeper method have reported a significant improvement in quality of life, with a dramatic (if not total) elimination of episodes of incontinence.

  • The concept of GateKeeper is the insertion of not just an implant but an active bulking agent called Hyexpan (polyacrylonitrile). This is a unique prosthetic material with shape memory, is biocompatible, inert, non pyrogenic and non degradable.
  • The implant is inserted between the internal and external anal sphincters.
  • Once inserted the Hyexpan shortens and increase in bulk by up to 800%. It is not a loose implant and combined properties they do not migrate, so the initial benefit is maintained overtime as opposed to other agents.
